Older Boys

This past weekend, we took the girls' to a reception for co-workers of Steven's. The host, a mama of three kids (a boy age 7 named Cross, and two girls, 5 and 2). When we arrived there was a pretty large group of girls' playing. Sena wanted to join in, but wasn't moving as fast as they were. Just when I was starting to worry her feelings would be hurt, Cross (the older boy) asked Sena if he wanted to play on the slide. (His mama had set up a small slide in his room for the little ones.) Sena was beyond tickled and went up with him (and me). And he was very nice to her, helping her up the slide. After the party:

Me: Sena, what was your favorite part of the party?
Sena: The older boy.
Steven and I: laughing. Oh yeah?
Sena: My favorite part was the older boy, Cross.

Hmm.. And it starts at 2 1/2.

Letter to Sena Month 33

Dear Sena,
Month 33. Wow. I may have to start blogging your letters with numbers I can actually remember and calculate, i.e. 3. I cannot believe you're nearing three, but you're doing a great job of reminding me nearly every day.

For instance, just a few months ago, you couldn't reach the doorknob handles (you're small, honey). So, we didn't worry about childproofing them. Then, just yesterday, you reached for the handle, turned it easily, and walked out of your room. Gasp! You can get around! Time to lock you down. Just kidding, but I am concerned about the terrible plunge you could take down our stairs so we will be doing some new childproofing here soon, especially since your big girl bed is set to arrive any day. I'm not sure how that's going to go over yet, but I figure you can't be in a crib your entire life.

Your vocabulary continues to astonish me, and make me laugh. You love telling us how it "actually" is, and telling us the order of things. You definitely like order to nearly everything, which you fortunately (and unfortunately) get from me. This week you're going to start a mini-preschool program, Toodles. I think it will be good for you, but I'm nervous about the drop-off. You broke my heart last fall when you balled your eyes out, thinking that I wasn't coming back to get you. Now that you know that having a sister doesn't mean losing your mama, I hope that you'll do better with this transition. It should be fun!?

The holidays were a big hit with you this year. You're still carrying around a Hanukkah book, reciting the letters on the dreidel. (I can't even do that.) And, you really got sad reading about Big Bird & Christmas Eve. (In the book, he goes up to the roof to find out about Santa, and falls asleep. Meanwhile, everyone is looking for him on Sesame Street.) Several times over the past month, you've woken up in tears, hoping that Big Bird remembered to wake up and come inside. And he did..

You continue to light our days and keep our days and nights busy. We love watching you interact with Noa.. you have an intuition, a motherly instinct, and you're frequently trying to take care of her.

We love you honey,
love
mama
